Lecture in Vitoria-Gasteiz on the occasion of the 2013 World Architecture Day / Conferencia en Vitoria-Gasteiz con motivo del Día Mundial de la Arquitectura 2013

I have been invited to deliver a lecture in tribute to Javier Carvajal in Vitoria-Gasteiz on the occasion of the 2013 World Architecture Day. It will be Monday, October 7 at 8:00 PM in a wonderful place, on the inside of one of the lightest and most floating spaces designed by Carvajal: the assembly nave of the church of Our Lady of the Angels (Bastiturri Kalea, 6, E 01008 Vitoria-Gasteiz, phone +34 945 225 085). It is organized by the Alava Chapter of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco-Navarro. It is certainly an excellent idea to celebrate the day of Architecture. I leave here the program. I will be very happy to see all those who can join us.

Me han invitado a pronunciar una conferencia en homenaje a Javier Carvajal en Vitoria-Gasteiz con motivo del Día Mundial de la Arquitectura 2013. Será el próximo lunes 7 de Octubre, a las 20:00 h en un lugar maravilloso, en el interior de uno de los espacios más ligeros y aéreos diseñados por Carvajal: la nave asamblearia del templo de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles (Bastiturri Kalea, 6, 01008 Vitoria-Gasteiz, teléfono 945 225 085). Lo organiza la Delegación de Álava del Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco-Navarro. Es sin duda una idea excelente para celebrar el día de la Arquitectura. Os dejo el programa. As I said a few months ago, during 2013-14 academic year I will not direct the workshop "Workshop of Activation Los Angeles 10 Paradigms", of which I am very happy, and which has already completed three editions (two of them in the MPAA at ETSAM), but a larger course: LAB 4, a laboratory dedicated to theory and architectural design, wondering what should happen.

We will be accompanied by fantastic teachers. We have prepared this presentation document that you can view or download. I'll keep you abreast of everything and I'm waiting for your suggestions and comments here or on Facebook.

Como os dije hace unos meses, durante el curso académico 2013-14 no dirigiré el taller "Taller de activación Los Ángeles 10 paradigmas", que ya ha cumplido tres ediciones (dos de ellas en el MPAA de la ETSAM) y del que he quedado muy contento, sino un curso de mayor tamaño: LAB 4, un laboratorio dedicado a la teoría y al proyecto que se pregunta qué debe pasar.

Estaremos acompañados de profes estupendos. Hemos preparado este dossier de presentación que podéis ver o descargar. Me gustará teneros al corriente de todo y espero vuestras sugerencias y comentarios aquí o en Facebook.

Next Monday, September 16, 2013, we will present the new Laboratory of Theory at the Master in Advanced Architectural Projects edition 5 (2013-14). It will be at 5:00 pm at ETSAM Conference Room (Old Pavillion, 3rd floor). It will be a course full of new things, we return to grow, more hours, more contents... Painting, work, life / Pintura, trabajo, vida

This is another picture of the building we are currently building in San Sebastian (Spain). I think this is architecture, although not born from the assumptions that are mostly considered as architecture. It is a look at the own work, shared work, manual work and life. Hung during construction, I hope that some of this painting remains in the finished building and hope to share it with you.

Esta es otra fotografía del edificio que estamos construyendo actualmente en San Sebastián. Creo que esto es arquitectura, aunque no nace de los supuestos que mayoritariamente se consideran arquitectura. Es una mirada al propio trabajo, al trabajo compartido, al trabajo manual y a la vida. Colgado durante la construcción, espero que algo de este cuadro quede en el edificio terminado y espero compartirlo con vosotros.

Tribute to Javier Carvajal in Bilbao / Homenaje a Javier Carvajal en Bilbao

Our friends from Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco-Navarro host a tribute to Javier Carvajal on July 4, 2013 at 7:30 PM in the Auditorium of the association headquarters in Bilbao (Alameda de Mazarredo, 71, Bilbao, opposite the Guggenheim Museum), perfectly organized by M. Arch. Juan Ignacio Intxausti. I am excited to be there, and we hope to see you there to remind an architect who changed our way of working and marked our lives.

Nuestros amigos del Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco-Navarro acogen un homenaje a Javier Carvajal el próximo 4 de julio de 2013 a las 19:30 en el Salón de Actos de la sede colegial de Bilbao (Alameda de Mazarredo, 71, Bilbao, enfrente del Museo Guggenheim) perfectamente organizado por Juan Ignacio Intxausti. Allí espero estar puntualmente, y allí esperamos a todos los que podáis venir para recordar a un arquitecto que cambió nuestra manera de trabajar y marcó nuestras vidas.

This morning, my dear teacher Javier Carvajal has died in Madrid. Now, the memories are piling up in my brain. Today I can only say goodbye. Farewell! I don't know if we will meet again.

Esta mañana ha fallecido en Madrid mi querido maestro el arquitecto Javier Carvajal. Los recuerdos se amontonan ahora en mi memoria. Hoy solo puedo decir adiós. ¡Adiós! No sé si nos volveremos a ver.

Invisible architecture? / ¿Arquitectura invisible?

John Howell, a Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester, decided to tackle an unusual DIY project. With the help of his 14 year-old son, Benjamin, he built three simple, but surprisingly effective optical cloaking devices with inexpensive, off-the-shelf materials. Cloaking is a common topic both in popular culture and in the scientific community. Cloaking means hiding an object from view at specific frequencies, and different types of cloaking have been recently demonstrated in labs around the world.
Howell and his son built three different devices to show that it is possible to do optical, unidirectional cloaking cheaply, and for large objects. Logically, I wonder greedily how can we transform the architecture with this...

John Howell, un profesor de física en la Universidad de Rochester, decidió abordar un inusual proyecto de bricolaje. Con la ayuda de Benjamin, su hijo de 14 años de edad, construyó tres simples pero sorprendentemente eficaces dispositivos ópticos de camuflaje con materiales baratos y accesibles. La invisibilidad es un tema común en la cultura popular y en la comunidad científica. Invisibilidad significa ocultar un objeto de la vista en frecuencias específicas. Diferentes tipos de encubrimiento se han probado recientemente en los laboratorios de todo el mundo.
Howell y su hijo construyeron tres diferentes dispositivos para mostrar que es posible construir una ocultación óptica, unidireccional y barata que funciona con objetos grandes. Lógicamente, me pregunto codiciosamente cómo podemos transformar la arquitectura con esto...

He rescatado esta conferencia que pronuncié en la Escuela de Arquitectura de Sevilla, llamado por los estudiantes. Si puedo señalar un valor, es el de hablar de muchos de nuestros proyectos en una sola charla y descubrir las resonancias que pudieran existir entre ellos.
