Irving Gill, 1916, Dodge House, West Hollywood (Activation and project Los Ángeles 10 paradigms by Juan Coll-Barreu: 2, abstraction)

Laughlin house in Los Angeles, Bailey house in La Jolla and Klauber house in San Diego, all built in 1907, had been the first three Irving Gill's white abstract boxes. He did not fail to improve their cubic language until his masterpiece in Los Angeles for Walter L. Dodge. The flat roof, the minimum-oriented radicalism of constructive details and the precise tangency of perfectly regular unornate prisms, away the architectural design from its missional Spanish antecedent. As in his earlier buildings, the architect pierced the white cloth of the facade with different proportions of rectangular holes to assess their location relative to the geometry of the prism. The interior conteined an even more unusual austerity. Vertical double heights were paneled in wood with no joints, to which the rails were incorporated in an exercise of abstract and smooth continuity. A rooftop swimming pool and a traversable garage certified the modernity of the approach.
